چکیده
node curve is fundamental in this theory. A number of Cremona's theorems on ruled surfaces with straight line directrices are generalized to apply to all ruled surfaces. Br. Wilczynski gives both analytic and synthetic proofs of these theorems. The third covariant furnishes another congruence associated with a given surface, and in particular a third ruled surface associated with the original one and the one already mentioned. A few brief remarks are made, showing how these covariant surfaces may serve to simplify the integration of the original system of differential equations. This paper will be combined with the previous paper on covariants for publication in the Transactions.

Deciding the Undecidable: Wrestling with Hilbert’s Problems
In the year 1900, the German mathematician David Hilbert gave a dramatic address in Paris, at the meeting of the 2nd International Congress of Mathematicians—an address which was to have lasting fame and importance. Hilbert was at that point a rapidly rising star, if not superstar, in mathematics, and before long he was to be ranked with Henri Poincaré as one of the two greatest and most influe...

Geometry is one of the oldest and most basic branches of mathematics, as is algebra. Nowhere is the interplay between the two more pronounced than in group theory, and that interplay with group theory acting as a mediator between geometry and algebra. It was Felix Klein in his “Erlanger Programme” who put group theory at the basis of geometry (see [KlE]). Klein advocated considering geometry as...

In his celebrated lecture: Mathematical problems (see [H]), which was delivered before the International Congress of Mathematicians at Paris in 1900, David Hilbert gave his famous 23 problems. The 12th problem is the extension of Kronecker’s theorem on abelian fields to any algebraic realm of rationality. Hilbert said:“The extension of Kronecker’s theorem to the case that, in place of the realm...
متن کاملThe Pragmatism of Hilbert's Programme
On 17 June 1899 the Göttingen society took part in the festive unveiling of the Gauss-Weber monument in memory of the great mathematical and physical tradition of the University of Göttingen. On the occasion of this event a commemorative volume was published containing two contributions: Emil Wiechert’s paper on the foundation of electrodynamics (Wiechert 1899 ) and David Hilbert’s paper on the...
متن کاملDecidability vs. undecidability. Logico-philosophico-historical remarks
The aim of the paper is to present the decidability problems from a philosophical and historical perspective as well as to indicate basic mathematical and logical results concerning (un)decidability of particular theories and problems. 1. Origin of the decidability problem It was David Hilbert with who one should associate the beginning of research on the decidability – he drew attention of mat...
